| From 11 October 1995 Retrospective: Speed geek Kiss my ass, NTIS | |
| Speed geek is a true story. Sort of. I was actually pulled over for an illegal lane change, near the intersection of highways 880 and 280 in San Jose. The sheriff who performed the ceremony must have been constipated that day; he was pissed. In some ways, Speed Geek is one of my favorite articles. There was very little response to it, but I think it adequately belittles the institution of traffic school. One last note: shortly after I published Speed geek, the company who "hosted" my traffic school class lost it's monopoly on teaching in Santa Clara County. Charges of corruption and bribery were publicized, and the county decided to let speeders pick their traffic school rather than force them to attend the one previously blessed by our esteemed local government. I think eight hours of traffic school would have been a more appropriate punishment for the lot of them. | ||||||||
